L-IĠM jappella għal soluzzjoni dwar is-SLAPP

L-Istitut tal-Ġurnalisti Maltin innota li fid-diskussjoni fl-istadju tal-Kumitat dwar il-Liġi tal-Media u Defamazzjoni ma kienx hemm qbil dwar kif it-theddida tas-SLAPP tista’ titneħħa minn fuq il-media lokali. Il-Kunsill innota l-istqarrija tal-Ministru Owen Bonnici fejn tliet esperti legali esprimew id-diffikulta li artiklu fil-liġi f’dan is-sens jista’ jkun f’kunflitt mal-Liġi Internazzjonali.

Madankollu l-Kunsill tal-IĠM iħoss li għandu jibqa’ jappella biex is-sitwazzjoni tkompli tkun studjata biex jinstab mezz kif il-liġi domestika tista’ tkun applikata biex it-theddida tas-SLAPP, li tista’ twassal għal falliment ta’ kull media lokali, tkun evitata.

address by IGM CHAIRPERSON

Ic-Chairperson tal-IĠM, Norma Saliba

Ftit inqas minn 6 ġimgħat għas-serata finali tat-28 edizzjoni tal-IGM Awards, huwa ta’ pjaċir għalija, li l-Istitut se jippremja l-aħjar xogħlijiet ġurnalistiċi li saru matul is-sena li għaddiet.

Kellna konkorrenza tajba, anke fit-tliet kategoriji ġodda, minn ġurnalisti li sena wara l-oħra jissottomettu ħidmiethom, u ġurnalisti li qed jieħdu sehem għall-ewwel darba.

Dan jimlina b’kuraġġ biex nibqgħu ntellgħu din is-serata minn sena għall-oħra li tirrikonoxxi l-isforzi li jsiru minn ġurnalisti, opinjonisti, xandara, cameramen u produtturi ta’ programmi.

Kellna 90 sottomissjoni din is-sena, f’21 kategorija.  Minnhom hemm 56 finalist jew finalista li issa se jikkompetu għall-unuri li se jsiru fil-5 ta’ Mejju li ġej. Ma’ dawn tiżdied kategorija oħra tal-Aħjar Użu tal-Ilsien Malti sponsorjata mill-Kunsill Nazzjonali tal-Ilsien Malti.

Kull min wasal s’hawn huwa diġà rebbieħ.  Rebbieħ għax ix-xogħol ta’ ġurnalist huwa essenzjali f’soċjetà demokratika li dejjem qed tevolvi u tinbidel.

IĠM condemns murder of Slovak investigative journalist

PRESS RELEASE : 26TH FEBRUARY 2018

The Institute of Maltese Journalists (L-Istitut tal-Ġurnalisti Maltin – IĠM) strongly condemns the murder of Slovak journalist Jan Kuciak.  Mr Kuciak was found murdered at his home in Velka Maca, Slovakia.

Slovak investigative journalist Jan Kuciak, 27, was murdered, police say.

According to the Slovak Head of Police Tibor Gaspar, “Jan Kuciak’s murder was most probably related to the journalist’s investigative work”.  Mr Kuciak had been investigating the business dealings of former Slovak Interior Minister Robert Kalinak.

In condemning Mr Kuciak’s murder, IĠM Acting Chairperson Ms Norma Saliba urged for an independent and impartial investigation to be carried out in Slovakia.  “Mr Kuciak’s is yet another murder of an investigative journalist in an EU member state.”

Daphne Caruana Galizia’s shocking murder in Malta brought to the fore the continuous pressure exerted against members of the Fourth Estate even in European countries where press freedom is considered to be a fundamental right.

In this context and as IĠM had stated last December, following the arrest of three suspects, we also urge the Maltese authorities to bring to justice the masterminds behind Ms Caruana Galizia’s murder.

As IĠM we urge the competent authorities to conduct investigations and to ensure that Mr Kuciak’s murderers are brought to justice.  We also call for competent authorities to foster a media-friendly environment which would allow journalists to operate without fear of revenge or retribution.
